Over the years, we have seen some amazing finishes to Premier League seasons. Who remembers the 2009/2010 season, when Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea edged Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side by a single point? And who doesn’t remember Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp goal against QPR that secured Manchester City’s first title in 44 years?
However, before the current season began, it had been a few years since we had witnessed a truly close title race. Manchester City ran away with the title last season, and so did Chelsea in the season before that. However, this season has been a different story. The title race we’ve witnessed in the 2018/19 season has truly been one for the ages, with both Manchester City and Liverpool being relentless for the entirety of the campaign.
There are only 2 games left to go with just a point separating Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides. Will Manchester City manage to retain their crown or will Liverpool finally end their 29-year wait for a 19th top flight title?
Manchester City: The Greatest Team in Premier League History?
What Pep Guardiola has built at the Etihad isn’t a team: it’s a machine – a machine that chews up teams and spits out result after result. Last season saw Manchester City break a plethora of records on their way to an unprecedented 100-point haul. While they won’t be able to reach a century of points this season, they’re arguably a better team than they were last season.
They are a more cohesive and ruthless unit. Kevin De Bruyne, who’s arguably their best player, has been missing for large parts of the season through injury, and Leroy Sane, who was the PFA Young Player of the Year last season has been out of form. However, City has still been unstoppable barring a few hiccups. At one point they were trailing Liverpool by 7 points, and it just shows the character of this team that they’ve managed to regain top position. With 2 games to go, Man City are definitely favorites to retain their crown.
Liverpool: Is it their Year
Liverpool’s transformation under Jurgen Klopp has been nothing short of extraordinary. From an unstable, unpredictable team, he’s turned Liverpool into one of Europe’s most consistent sides. Their 91 points from 36 games would have been enough to secure them the title in 20 of the 28 Premier League seasons, and that just shows the strength of the rivals they’re up against.
Liverpool’s attacking triumvirate of Salah, Firmino and Mane have been as devastating as ever, with two of them leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. However, the star of this team has been Virgil Van Dijk. The giant defender has been largely responsible for Liverpool’s defense being the meanest one in the country, with just 20 goals conceded all season. He was deservedly awarded the PFA Player of the Year – the first defender to win the award since John Terry in 2005.
Liverpool will rue the points they dropped in March against inferior team. However, they’re currently on a streak of 10 wins in a row and will look to ensure that the title race goes straight to the wire. Millions of fans will be hoping for a miracle from now to the end of the season. Stay tuned, ladies and gentlemen.
